Frank und sein älterer Bruder Jerry Lee Flannigan führen ein unstetes Leben in Reno, Nevada. Die beiden Highschool-Abbrecher schlagen sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durch und leben in billigen Motels. Frank entflieht dem tristen Alltag kraft seiner Fantasie und selbst gezeichneten Comics, die die Motelräume zieren. Nachdem Jerry Lee volltrunken während eines Blizzards einen unachtsamen Fahrrad fahrenden Jungen überfahren hat und Fahrerflucht begeht, fliehen die Brüder gemeinsam aus der Stadt und nach Montana. Auf der anschließenden Odyssee werden die Brüder allerdings getrennt. Während Frank durch eine gewonnene Spielwette überraschend zu einem kleinen Vermögen kommt, plagen Jerry Lee Schuldgefühle und er unternimmt einen Selbstmordversuch. Durch Zufall erfährt Frank davon und kann ihn aus dem Krankenhaus schleusen, bevor die Polizei Jerry Lee findet.
